AI Act: Joint letter of right holders

NME news , October 30, 2024

News Media Europe and 24 other rightsholder organisations in Europe are calling for a meaningful implementation of the AI Act to enable creators and rightholders to enforce their rights when it comes to AI models.

The cultural and creative industry reiterates its support for the aims of the AI Act. The Act is a pioneering model of ethical and responsible regulation that sets the basis for best practice at global level.

As the EU develops its first ever Code of Practice on AI, rightsholders wish to remind lawmakers that expectations are high.

Rightsholders currently contend with the seriously detrimental situation of generative AI companies taking content without authorisation on an industrial scale to develop AI models, resulting in illegal commercial gains and unfair competitive advantages.

NME calls on EU decision makers to uphold the standards set in the AI Act to enable the cultural and creative industries to evolve and thrive. The Act must ensure that innovation also safeguards and strengthens the intellectual property of content creators.
